Watching Amaury Laverhne win the World Title over the weekend was one More ...
"Ding, ding, ding, ding" Jonny stirring his coffee was the official alarm clock on the second day of our trip up the coast to Iluka in search of waves.
It was 6:00am at the seedy little hotel where we had just spent the night. The wind was offshore and we could hear the waves breaking in the still of the morning.
We crammed into the car and headed down to the beach. We were driving up the beach getting closer to the waves and everyone was frothing, with clean offshore empty peaks, our crew had became quite excited. It's amazing how good waves can make you feel - you only really appreciate it to its fullest when you have been starved of waves for a long time. I couldn't help think how empty I would feel if I could never spend time in the ocean.
We raced out there and had a ball of a session! I was testing the new Turbo boards and had one of the best surfs I have had in a long time. Jonny and Chase were also like pigs in mud, paddling around like they had an outboard motor attached to them. We surfed for about three hours, then came in.
At lunchtime we got to another little novelty reef called "Lovers". It was pretty poor, but we went out regardless. The evening session was back out at Iluka. It wasn't as good as the morning, but when you haven't had waves for quite a while you take what you can get.
We finished the day off with a nice little meal at the pub and a slap on the pokies. Unfortunately the pokey luck was not as rewarding as the waves... in fact quite the opposite. I lost nearly $100 and was pretty dirty. It's been a while since I have had a dig like that. It's funny gambling, once you lose a bit you straight away say "I have to get that back!", so you put in more, in the hope of getting it back. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it's a vicious cycle ending in you losing more than you expect. Regardless of the pokies, the waves had made up for everything and we were stoked!
Tomorrow we are leaving Iluka in search of something different... might be time to bust out the Jetski!
