Well the waves couldn't last forever, but today there was still enough swell to dust of the Jet Ski and whip into some little slabs.
For those who don't know a lot about body boarding, Jet Ski tows would have to look pretty exciting to the average punter. You sit in the shoreline, just where the waves break, with the Jet Ski, while the rider hangs onto the tow rope behind the ski. When the Jet Ski driver see’s a wave coming, they go full speed to fling the rider into the tinny swell. The rider hits the wave at around 40 km per hour and fly's into the air performing acrobatic moves. It's great when there is limited swell, as the ski provides you with more speed than you know what to do with. It's also a great way of getting good photos, which in this trip has been one of the main priorities.
It's the last day of our road trip and a successful one at that. We didn't get the biggest waves ever, but made the most of the opportunity we had. I think that's the main thing when you do trips, making the best decisions so you don't blow the swells. That said, I heard it was huge down the coast of Sydney, but super crowded and waves that aren't good for manoeuvres. This swell was a good opportunity to test my new boards on waves that allowed me to do manoeuvres.
It's now only seven days till I go to Hawaii for the first event of the 2010 calendar. I am feeling pretty good and haven't had boards as good as the one's I'm riding now, since I won the World title. The next week the swell is small, but still surfable. I am going to spend the week ahead swimming and getting my lung capacity ready to deal with big Pipe. No matter how fit you are, Pipe will always sort you out!
Hawaii is the ultimate proving ground!
